How long does a hair transplant surgery usually take?
The duration of the surgery is determined by several factors:
Factors affecting the surgery duration
1. Method of follicle harvesting
The method of harvesting hair follicles from the donor area can impact the surgery duration.
In follicular unit transplantation, there are three methods: complete shaving, partial shaving, and non-shaving. Complete shaving generally takes the shortest time, while non-shaving takes the longest.
2. Treatment area
Whether the surgery involves creating a new hairline in areas without existing hair or reinforcing density in areas with existing hair can also affect the surgery time. Reinforcing density in areas with existing hair usually takes longer.
3. Condition of harvested follicles and the scalp
The condition of the harvested follicles and the patient's scalp, whether they are in good or poor condition, and whether the scalp is soft or firm, can also impact the surgery duration.
Average duration
Apart from these factors, the experience and expertise of the surgeon and medical team can also influence the surgery time. On average, a surgery involving approximately 1500 follicles takes around 5 hours.
