Correcting a disappointing first result
Some people consider another transplant when growth remains disappointing after enough time has passed, or when the hairline looks unnatural. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) describes low density, overly low or straight hairlines, and incorrectly angled hairs as reasons for corrective work.repair
The procedure depends on the problem. It might involve adding hair to sparse areas, removing some poorly positioned grafts, or moving them. Simply adding more grafts will not address every concern.repair
Poor growth also calls for investigation. ISHRS advises reviewing possible causes, including scalp or medical conditions, and addressing any identified condition before considering another procedure.repeat
Building on a result you already like
Someone can be pleased with their first transplant and still want a little more coverage. They may want greater density in a treated area or hair added somewhere the first procedure did not cover.
An ISHRS patient account describes satisfaction after an initial transplant, followed by another procedure to treat the crown and increase density in previously treated areas.story Being happy with a result and wanting a further improvement can go together.
There is a limit to how much hair can be added. The amount available for another transplant depends on how much more can be taken from the donor area. The surgeon needs to consider both the areas you want improved and the hair that remains available.repair
Addressing further loss of native hair
An initially satisfying result can change as native hair around the transplant continues to thin. Transplantation does not stop that underlying process, and a further procedure may be considered to fill areas affected by subsequent loss.repeat
Ongoing treatment is part of that discussion. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) explains that doctors may recommend medication because hair loss can continue after surgery.aad
When should a second transplant be considered?
First, the initial result needs time to develop. NHS guidance notes that transplanted hairs can shed a few weeks after surgery and that full results may take 10–18 months.nhs Early sparseness is therefore a reason to review the growth timeline before rushing into another operation.
At a consultation, review where grafts were placed, how many were used, what you want improved, and whether sufficient donor hair remains. The timing and extent of further surgery depend on assessment of scalp recovery and the available donor supply.repair
Sudden, patchy, scarring, painful, or rapidly worsening loss should be assessed by a dermatologist before considering further surgery.
