Low vitamin D levels occur in some people with hair loss, but this does not prove supplements will restore hair. If a blood test shows that you are low in vitamin D, you may need a supplement. However, bringing your levels back up does not necessarily improve hair loss, so it is also important to find out why your hair is falling out.review
How are deficiency and hair loss related?
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis compared vitamin D levels in people with alopecia and controls. Deficiency was statistically associated with alopecia areata and female pattern hair loss, but findings differed across diagnoses.review
Comparing blood levels cannot establish whether deficiency caused hair loss or whether supplementation reverses it. The authors called for further research into supplementation as treatment.review
Do vitamin D supplements help hair loss?
A 2022 study divided 45 women with female pattern hair loss into three groups: topical minoxidil plus oral vitamin D, minoxidil alone, and vitamin D alone, for six months. On a clinical severity scale, the combination improved more than minoxidil alone; vitamin D alone showed no significant improvement.trial
One small study cannot establish vitamin D's independent regrowth effect or justify routine combination treatment. Its findings cannot simply be extended to male pattern loss or other diagnoses, and do not support replacing established treatment with supplements.trial
Does everyone with shedding need a test?
A dermatologist assesses the pattern, scalp, and medical history, then selects tests when a nutritional deficiency or another condition is suspected.aad
The Endocrine Society's 2024 guideline advises against routine vitamin D screening in generally healthy adults without an established indication. It concerns disease prevention, rather than alopecia care, and does not rule out testing when clinically needed. Discuss testing in the context of your symptoms and health.guideline
How much should you take if levels are low?
There is no established universal vitamin D dose or blood-level target for hair regrowth. Deficiency treatment should reflect your test results and medical circumstances.reviewguideline
Excess supplementation can raise blood calcium and harm the kidneys. NIH lists an adult upper intake limit of 4,000 IU daily from food and supplements combined. This is neither a recommended dose nor a hair-loss treatment dose. Clinicians may prescribe higher doses temporarily to treat deficiency.nih
Check the combined vitamin D content if you take several supplements. An improvement in your vitamin D level does not tell you whether your hair is growing back; both need to be checked. Seek dermatology care for sudden, patchy, painful, potentially scarring, or rapidly worsening loss.
