Creatine Recommendations, Benefits, and Hair-Loss Concerns

Creatine may improve resistance-training performance, but it does not build muscle without training. Current evidence also does not show that creatine causes hair loss. When choosing a product, focus on creatine monohydrate, the daily dose, and cost per gram rather than country of origin alone.

What does creatine do?

Creatine helps replenish energy used during short, intense exercise. In people who train consistently, it can improve exercise performance and may help them complete more training over time. Creatine monohydrate is the most extensively studied form.

Follow the daily serving shown on the label of Korean health-functional-food products. Taking creatine alone will not automatically increase muscle mass.

Does creatine cause hair loss?

The concern largely began with a small 2009 study that reported increased DHT after creatine supplementation. That study did not measure actual hair loss.

In a 2025 randomized controlled trial, resistance-trained men aged 18–40 took 5 g of creatine monohydrate daily for 12 weeks. Compared with placebo, there were no significant differences in DHT, hair density, follicular-unit count, or cumulative hair thickness. The current evidence therefore does not establish that creatine causes hair loss. However, one 12-week study in young men cannot answer every question about long-term use or other populations.

Chinese or German creatine: which should you choose?

Much of the creatine sold in Korea uses raw material sourced from China or Germany. The quality of Chinese-sourced ingredients has improved, so there is no reason to choose a more expensive German source based on origin alone. When the Korean health-functional-food labeling, creatine-monohydrate content, and product specifications are comparable, a less expensive Chinese-sourced product may be the more sensible choice.

Two creatine products to consider in Korea

Based on the prices and sizes reported in the original Korean product comparison:

  • For bulk value: Jambangee Just Creatine Monohydrate, 1.2 kg (400 servings). The source listed it at KRW 29,900, or about KRW 24.9 per gram. Check the current price
  • For a small trial size: Extreme Monocreatine Plus, sold at Daiso in a 120 g pack (about 40 days). The source listed it at KRW 5,000; availability varies by store. Its 600 g online pack was listed at KRW 29,900. Check the online price

Prices and availability may change. Before buying, confirm the Korean health-functional-food mark, creatine-monohydrate ingredient, serving dose, and additives on the current label.

Check before taking it

Creatine use can affect the interpretation of blood creatinine, so tell your clinician before testing or treatment. If you have kidney disease or take medication that affects kidney function, consult a physician first.

Seek a dermatologist's evaluation for sudden, patchy, painful, scarring, or rapidly worsening hair loss rather than simply stopping a supplement and waiting.
